Life Before Mtendere
After Susan’s husband died, she took over their farm for 10 years, however when there was a long drought in Malawi she and her family suffered severely.  Her brother died and she inherited his 2 children.  It was very difficult to be the sole provider for 11 children.

“Things are better now.  I can help my children and grandchildren with many things and none of us are going hungry.”

Life Before Mtendere
After her husband died, life was very difficult.  She could only provide very small meals and could not afford school fees, uniforms, bathing supplies for her children.

Life Now at Mtendere
Now she is able to assist with school fees for her children and grandchildren.  She likes sleeping on a mattress now.

“I enjoy praying with the children and telling them old stories from when I was a child like them.”

Life Before Mtendere
After her husband passed away, it was very hard to provide for all 5 of her children.  She was able to find odd jobs in order to pay school fees, but could not provide clothing and many other daily needs.

“I am very happy now.  Each paycheck goes home to help my family and they do not have to struggle like I did.”

She likes to chat with the children in her house at night.  They like when she tells them old village stories of her childhood.

Life Before Mtendere
After her husband died, she found a job in the market selling used clothing to get by.  Every month she feared not making enough to provide for herself and her 2 children.

“I feel secure now.  I know every month that I will be able to send money home for school fees for secondary school.”

She likes teaching the children and singing gospel songs with them at night.

Life Before Mtendere
Life was very difficult because of being widowed twice in her life.  She and her children had to move in with her mother, but it was still very difficult to provide daily essentials.

Life Before Mtendere
After her husband died, life became very difficult raising 8 children on her own.  Her church was able to assist her and also helped her get a job at Mtendere.

“Things have changed for me.  I can take care of myself, and am able to assist my grandchildren.”

She likes reading the Bible to the children.  The children enjoy when she tells them stories of her life growing up in her village.

After her husband passed away, life was very hard to provide for 6 children.  It was hard to find a job, but she was able to do odd jobs to provide little food, but could not provide clothing or pay for health care.

“I really enjoy my life now!  I have 3 meals a day and a nice home and still have money to send home to my family.”

She enjoys teaching the children how do house work.  She also enjoys reading and singing with the children before bed.
